Many of the photos from Pa's album have been damaged with time and by insects. Some are still sharp, others have become vague. The images on these pages are far from perfect reproductions of the photos. Many I have had to reproduce in haste, and optimize them for these webpages, just to be able to share them. I do believe they give a good sampling of Charles Pickering's photographs.

Could Charlie Pickering be considered an artist in his field? I cannot tell. Only photographers and those knowledgeable of art can judge that. I am only grateful, that my grandfather recorded what he saw, and made it possible for us today, to see "through his eyes" what the world called Nickerie, Suriname, looked like in his time.

Veel foto's uit Pa's album zijn door de tijd en door insekten beschadigd. Enkele zijn nog heel scherp, weer andere vervaagd. De volgende plaatjes zijn geen volmaakte reprodukties van de foto's. Haast allemaal heb ik in de haast moeten reproduceren en bewerken om ze voor deze webpagina's geschikt te maken. Ik geloof echter dat ze toch een goed beeld geven van de foto's die Charles Pickering tijdens zijn loopbaan als fotograaf gemaakt heeft.

Zou Charlie Pickering als een kunstenaar beschouwd kunnen worden? Ik weet het niet. Alleen fotografen en kunstkenners kunnen daarover oordelen. Ik ben alleen maar dankbaar, dat hij vastlegde wat hij zag, waardoor wij vandaag "door zijn ogen" kunnen zien, hoe de wereld, genoemd Nickerie, er in zijn tijd uitzag.
